As a veteran, active duty servicemember, or military spouse, you know your education benefits weren’t free. You’ve earned them. So, why not use them to their full advantage?

At Stevens-Henager College, our military financial planners will work with you individually to create a personalized financial aid plan that includes all the financial aid benefits you may qualify for. Below are just a handful of the benefits you could use to help pay for your degree.

01 | Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserves

Military Tuition Discounts

If you are actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, in the Reserves, or in the National Guard, you could qualify for military tuition discounts! This benefit also applies to employees of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Go here for more information.

Top Up

If the cost of your tuition is larger than the amount Tuition Assistance provides, you can use this benefit to help pay the difference of the total remaining cost. You must be eligible for GI Bill benefits and meet eligibility requirements for Tuition Assistance.

Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill

For servicemembers who have served on active duty for at least 90 days after 9/11/2001, or who were discharged with a service-related disability after 30 consecutive days. Honorable discharge required for veterans. If eligible, this benefit could cover up to 100% of your college tuition and fees.

Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill

If you paid into this benefit while on active duty, you could have a significant amount of your tuition and fees covered. This benefit pays to you directly rather than to the institution, so make sure to arrange payment with your college military financial planner.

Chapter 1606: Selective Reserve Montgomery GI Bill

For members of the Selective Reserve and National Guard who have enlisted or re-enlisted with a commitment to serve six or more years on or after July 1, 1985. This benefit pays to you directly rather than to the institution, so make sure to arrange payment with your college military financial planner.

Chapter 1607: Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

REAP assists reservists and members of the National Guard called to active duty in response to war or national emergency for at least 90 cumulative days after 9/11/2001. This benefit pays to you directly rather than to the institution, so make sure to arrange payment with your college military financial planner.

Kickers & Additional Contributions

“Kickers” are part of an enlistment contract, often referred to as the Army College Fund. Kickers are fixed dollar amounts that are disbursed in equal installments during the entitlement period for Chapter 30 and 1606 recipients.

02 | Veterans

Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill

For servicemembers who have served on active duty for at least 90 days after 9/11/2001, or who were discharged with a service-related disability after 30 consecutive days. Honorable discharge required for veterans. If eligible, this benefit could cover up to 100% of your college tuition and fees.

Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)

If you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in VEAP, the federal government will match you contributions on a two-for-one basis. VEAP benefits must be used within 10 years after your honorable release from active duty service.

Yellow Ribbon Program

This benefit provides tuition assistance to veterans who are 100% eligible for the Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill and whose cost of tuition and fees exceed the annual cap. Once your annual cap is reached, half of your remaining cost for tuition and fees for the fiscal year will be covered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational Rehabilitation is designed to provide educational support to eligible veterans entering the workforce. This benefit could cover the entire cost of your tuition and fees. To use this benefit, you will have to meet with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor to develop an education plan.

03 | Military Spouses

Tuition Assistance for Military Spouses

If you’re the spouse of an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, or if your spouse is currently serving in the Reserves or National Guard, you could qualify for military tuition discounts! Go here for more information.

Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MYCAA) Program

This benefit provides educational assistance to spouses of Active Duty servicemembers who are pursuing an associate’s degree or certificate program. If eligible, you could qualify for up to $4,000 lifetime limit, with a maximum of $2,000 per Department of Defense fiscal year (Oct 1–Sept 30).

Transfer of Education Benefit (TEB) Post 9/11 Bill to Dependents

If your spouse is a qualifying active duty servicemember, he or she may be able to transfer his or her unused Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) benefits on to you or your dependent children. This benefit could cover 100% of your total tuition and fees up to $19,198.31 per fiscal year (Aug 1–July 31).

Fry Scholarship

This benefit provides Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) benefits to dependents of servicemembers who have died in the line of duty after 9/10/2001. If you or your dependent children qualify for this benefit, you could have a significant portion of your tuition covered.

Chapter 35 Survivor and Dependents Assistance

Designed to provide financial assistance to spouses and dependents of veterans who have died or are totally or permanently disabled as a result of their service. This benefit can be used to assist with the cost of tuition and fees. This benefit pays to you directly rather than to the institution, so make sure to arrange payment with your college military financial planner.
