Math for Moms and Dads Serves as a Refresher Course for Parents to Help Their Children
Idaho Falls, Idaho (September 06, 2012) —
The Idaho Falls campus of Stevens-Henager College, a leading provider of on-campus and online higher education, will hold a series of free math classes designed to serve as refresher courses for parents who help their children with homework.
Math for Moms and Dads is a two-part class that will be held Wednesdays, Sept. 19 and 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Idaho Falls campus, located at 901 Pier View Drive, Suite 105. The course reviews basic math skills learned by students in the fourth through eighth grades, including fractions, decimals and math concepts through basic algebra. The class is part of the campus’ Good Neighbor Initiative (GNI), a program that provides free education, training and workshops to Idaho Falls residents.
“Math has the potential to overwhelm and frustrate many parents. It’s understandable and common for a child to bring home math homework that neither they nor their parents understand,” said Shane Reeder, Idaho regional director for Stevens-Henager College. “We’re committed to helping our community succeed in education; and children do better in school when parents provide needed support.”
Stevens-Henager College has worked directly with the local school district to ensure that Math for Moms and Dads meets the requirements of the district’s math curriculum. Each parent receives a CD with practice problems and notes to follow along with the instructor. But the class is not just about parents mastering math concepts. Instructors also demonstrate interactive games and activities that parents can use to help teach and reinforce concepts that are taught in their child’s classroom.
“Math is a spring board for many aspects of education,” said Felicia Wright, Idaho Falls campus director. “If students receive help early on, their probability for success is multiplied. Our goal is to enable parents to be a resource for their children.”
