Stevens-Henager College Celebrates 100th Graduate from GED Test Preparation Program

Free Courses Offered on Boise Campus through the Good Neighbor Initiative
Boise, ID (April 23, 2012)  —

Stevens-Henager College, a leading provider of on-campus and online higher education, celebrated its Boise campus's 100th graduate from its GED® test preparation program, a part of the Good Neighbor Initiative. The Good Neighbor Initiative provides free education, training and development opportunities, including nurse assisting, phlebotomy, basic computer skills and how-to-get-a-job workshops, in addition to GED® test preparation.*

The 100th graduate, Loasa "Danelle" Turner, attended high school in the Treasure Valley, but did not graduate with her class. While in high school, she completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and worked for seven years as a CNA but felt stagnant in her position. After becoming engaged a year ago, Danelle determined it was time to make a change and obtain the GED credential she had always wanted.

"Education is important, and I don't want the fact that I didn't complete mine to keep my future family from seeing the value education brings," said Turner. "Everyone at the Boise campus was so friendly and helpful. I was excited to return, excited to work on things, and not afraid to ask for help. I felt supported and encouraged, and knew I was surrounded by people who believed in me."

Dave Ficks, adjunct instructor for Stevens-Henager College, congratulated Danelle at the ceremony held Tuesday. "As a GED recipient myself, I understand firsthand how important it is to support these usually disadvantaged people," Ficks said. "This is a huge accomplishment. The Good Neighbor Initiative builds real value — both in the business and the community it resides in. Congratulations to the first 100 completers of the program; you have made one huge step forward in life." Danelle completed her GED in the same week that she got married. She is looking forward to continuing her education to become a midwife. "I am excited to progress in my education, "she said. "I am no longer stagnant. I feel like my whole life has opened up."
