Salt Lake Campus of Stevens-Henager College Helps More Than 1,700 Individuals Earn Their GED Credential
Salt Lake City (March 11, 2013) —
The Salt Lake campus of Stevens-Henager College celebrated the achievements of 59 Salt Lake County residents on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The residents earned their GED credential after utilizing the college’s free GED preparation classes offered through the Good Neighbor Initiative, which also covers the cost of testing fees for students.
“These students have overcome great personal obstacles to earn their GED credential,” said Donna Schena, GED coordinator at the Salt Lake campus. “Stevens-Henager College removes some of those obstacles, but the credit truly goes to these remarkable individuals who are motivated and ready to make a difference in their lives.”
The classes are held through Steven-Henager College’s Good Neighbor Initiative, a service which offers classes, training and other career skills workshops at no cost to community members. Over the past year, more than 1,700 GED students have earned their credential through this service.
The campus holds a monthly celebration to recognize students who have passed the GED exam. On average, the campus has anywhere between 70 to 90 GED students testing each month.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals who have a GED or high school diploma earn nearly $10,000 more per year and are less likely to be unemployed than those who do not have a high school degree. More than 10 percent of Salt Lake County residents aged 25 or older has not earned a high school diploma or GED certificate.
