Stevens-Henager College Serves Cache Valley Taxpayers with Free Program

LOGAN, UT— The Logan campus of Stevens-Henager College assisted Cache Valley taxpayers to prepare 82 tax returns this year, completely free of charge. The free tax-preparation service was in conjunction with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, created by the IRS to serve low-income taxpayers, persons with disabilities, and people with limited English-speaking abilities.
This was the first year the Logan campus participated in the VITA program, and it was a success thanks to the hard work of staff volunteer Danielle Bird, and student volunteers Jacob Olsen, Lindsay Barber, Ashlyn Hebdon and Rebekah Thompson.
The student volunteers completed online IRS training and certification exams before assisting the public. Olsen was recognized as a Bear River Association of Governments Volunteer of the Year for his service to the community.
“We completed over 80 tax returns for people in Cache Valley and were recognized by the IRS for having a perfect score on all our returns,” said James Birman, executive director of the Logan campus. “The VITA team spent nearly 300 volunteer hours to make that happen.”
College students, parents, retirees, and people from all walks of life took advantage of the free service, having their taxes filed in as short a time as one hour. The Logan campus also assisted Cache Valley's senior citizens through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program.
Bird said helping people save money and get the most of their tax refund was the most rewarding part of her experience.
“People pay so much to get their taxes done,” Bird said.
